When is the best time to visit Bhutan?

How do I get a visa to Bhutan?
Obtaining a Bhutan visa is simple:
Option 1: Apply directly through the Visit Bhutan Portal. Register, create an account, sign the friendship pledge, and complete the online steps.

What is SDF and how is it used?
The SDF (Sustainable Development Fee) is a daily levy paid by visitors to support Bhutan’s development. It helps fund facilities, services, infrastructure, free healthcare, and education for Bhutanese nationals and visitors. SDF ensures tourism remains sustainable and supports preservation of Bhutan’s culture and environment.
How much is the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)?
The SDF is USD 100 per person per night for most tourists. Indian, Bangladeshi, and Maldivian tourists have a different fee structure. For the latest updates, check bhutan.travel/visa or contact your tour operator.
If we stay in 4-5 star hotels, do we have to pay extra?
Yes, additional charges for 4-5 star hotels are automatically included in your Bhutan tour package price.
Do I need to send my passport?
No physical passport is needed. Just send a color scanned copy to process your visa application.
What currency is used in Bhutan?
The Bhutanese currency is Ngultrum (BTN), pegged 1:1 to the Indian Rupee (INR), which is widely accepted. Bring sufficient cash (preferably USD) for shopping and expenses. Credit cards (VISA/MasterCard) are accepted in some places, but inform your bank before travel. ATMs are available in major towns, but carry some cash for remote areas.
Do we require travel insurance?
Travel insurance is always recommended. Bhutan’s healthcare is good, but may not meet western standards. Insure your travel from your home country. Local insurance can be arranged for coverage during your stay.
Are tobacco/cigarettes available in Bhutan?
Sale of tobacco is allowed, but import is strictly regulated. Travelers may bring up to 200 cigarettes for personal use (subject to high taxes). Smoking is prohibited in many public places; follow local regulations and use designated smoking areas.
What kind of accommodation is available in Bhutan?
Bhutan offers a range of accommodation: luxury 5-star hotels, boutique lodges, and cozy homestays in traditional villages (all approved by the Department of Tourism).
If I cancel my trip, will the SDF be refunded?
Yes, the Department of Immigration will refund the SDF for cancelled or shortened trips (bank charges may apply).
What is the Bhutan visa process?
Apply online at the official portal. You’ll need:
  • Passport valid for 6 months beyond exit date
  • Recent passport photo (white background)
  • Arrival and departure dates
  • USD 40 visa fee and USD 100 per night SDF
Steps: Sign the friendship pledge, create an account, add travel details, complete payment. You can save and return to your application. Processing takes up to 5 working days.

How do I book flights to Bhutan?
Bhutan is serviced by Drukair and Bhutan Airlines. Due to limited flights, book early. You can book online or we can assist for a 4% booking fee.
What is the best time to visit Bhutan?

What is your booking and refund policy?
Booking: 20% deposit required to confirm, balance due 60 days before arrival.
Cancellation:
  • More than 60 days before arrival: Ground handling fees refunded
  • Within 60 days: No refund
  • SDF: Always refundable for shortened/cancelled trips
  • Flights: Refunds as per airline policy
