Druk Path Trek Overview
Druk Path trek is a moderate, six days trek. This popular trek offers beautiful views as you cross the chain of mountains separating the Paro and Thimphu valleys. This route is also famous for its spectacular rhododendron forests and wonderful high altitude lakes teeming with fish. There will be a number of temples and Dzongs to visit on the way and in the clear weather of late autumn and winter there are great views of the Himalayas. You will also have the combined package tour visiting Paro, Thimphu and a day excursion to Punakha.
Seasons: This trek is usually possible from late February to June and from September to December.
Druk Path Trek Itinerary (11 Days / 10 Nights)
Day 1: Arrival Paro
Meet our representatives at the airport exit gate. Lunch in Paro, then afternoon sightseeing including Ta Dzong National Museum and Rinpong Dzong. Walk to the beautiful cantilever wooden bridge. Overnight: Paro
Day 2: Paro – Tiger’s Nest Hike
After breakfast, hike to Tiger’s Nest (Paro Taktsang). The trail takes about 2 hours uphill. After lunch at Taktsang cafeteria, if time permits, drive to Drugyal Dzong. On clear days, see the sacred mount Jomolhari (7314m). Overnight: Paro
Day 3: Paro – Jili Dzong (Trek Start)
Trekking starts: 8km, 4-5 hours, 1090m ascent. Climb up to Jili Dzong. If weather is clear, see Paro valley surrounded by snow capped mountains. Camp near Jili La (3400m) and Jili Dzong (altitude 3480m).
Day 4: Jili Dzong – Jangchu Lakha
10km, 3-4 hours, 310m descent then gradual ascent. Trek through thick alpine forests of rhododendrons. Fine views of Mt. Jomolhari and snow capped peaks if weather is clear. Meet yak herders near campsite (altitude 3770m).
Day 5: Jangchu Lakha – Jimi Langtsho
11km, 4 hours, 230m descent, 330m ascent. Trail follows the ridge with sensational views. See Jichu Drake (6989m), the protective deity of Paro. Camp near Jimi Langtsho, famous for giant trout (altitude 3870m).
Day 6: Jimi Langtsho – Simkota
11km, 4 hours, 850m ascent, 400m descent. Trail through dwarf rhododendron trees, pass Janitsho Lake, yak herder camps. Camp near Simkota Lake.
Day 7: Simkota – Phajoding
10km, 4 hours, 130m ascent, 680m descent. Gradual climb, enjoy views of Gangkhar Puensum (highest peak in Bhutan). Descend through juniper trees to campsite (altitude 3610m).
Day 8: Phajoding – Thimphu
5km, 3 hours, downhill through blue pine forest. Arrive in Thimphu, check into hotel and refresh. Overnight: Thimphu
Day 9: Thimphu – Punakha Excursion
Day excursion to Punakha via Dochu La pass (3100m) for Himalayan views. Visit Punakha Dzong, walk to Chimi Lhakhang (Temple of Drukpa Kunley) through Sopsokha village. Return to Thimphu. Overnight: Thimphu
Day 10: Thimphu – Paro
Sightseeing in Thimphu: National Memorial Chorten, Changangkha temple, Zilukha Nunnery, School of Arts and Crafts, Folk Heritage Museum, Takin preservation center. Early evening depart for Paro. Overnight: Paro
Day 11: Depart Paro
After breakfast, drive to airport for your flight.
